Brokenism

 Facing Reality,

From November 2022, the origin of the term,  Brokenism, Alana Newhouse
The real debate today isn’t between the left and right. It’s between those invested in our current institutions, and those who want to build anew.
Two years ago, I wrote an essay in which I tried to explore the growing sense, made more glaring during the first year of the pandemic, that whole parts of American society were breaking down before our eyes. The central idea was that we must accept what is broken beyond repair in order to build our communities and institutions anew.
Among the many people who wrote to me in the aftermath was a man around my age named Ryan, who introduced himself as a West Point graduate and combat veteran, biracial and from a multi-generational Black military family. “I’ve lived and traveled all over the world, but I cherish my family’s deep roots in a small town in rural Ohio,” he wrote. “It seems very dark some days, but your closing nails it: ‘It can almost feel easier to believe it can’t be done. But it can.’” As I did with many others who wrote me heartfelt notes, I reached out to Ryan and asked to meet over Zoom. It turned out we had more in common than either of us had guessed, and we began a correspondence that’s endured since then.
At one point last year, Ryan said something that struck a nerve. “I don’t know what I identify as these days, because everything has gotten so scrambled,” he noted. “I’m not a Democrat or a Republican, I don’t even think I could define myself narrowly as either a liberal or a conservative anymore. The one thing I know that I fundamentally do believe is the premise of your piece, that the dominant institutions of American life—in education, in the arts, in politics—are either totally broken or so weak or corrupt that they’re becoming irrelevant. In a way, the only thing I know that I believe in is … brokenness.”

A few days ago:  The Brokenists Did Not Move Right   Frank J. DiStefano
People haven't moved politically. It’s a different fight. It’s also transitional. This isn't the final form of the Republican or Democratic Parties.
Among the strangest developments of the last decade has been the migration of so many prominent people from the political left to the right.
I’m thinking about crusading lefty journalists like Matt Taibbi and Glenn Greenwald. Former Democratic Congresswoman and DNC Vice Chair Tulsi Gabbard, who rose to fame supporting Bernie Sanders over Hillary ClintonLefty academics like Bret Weinstein, who taught at the proudly activist Evergreen State College. Entertainment industry stalwarts like Russell Brand, Joe Rogan, and Theo Von. Former environmental activist Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.—an honest-to-goodness Kennedy from the Democratic Party’s royal family.
This odd coalition includes many of the people Oliver Wiseman in The Free Press recently called Brokenists (riffing on a concept first coined by Alana Newhouse). What’s important about these figures is they didn’t really “move right.” In fact, the thing we’re now calling “left” and “right” has nothing to do with liberalism or conservatism...
..The reality is these people didn’t “move” right because they haven’t moved anywhereThe labels left and right are up for grabs, and these people are the stubborn and independent-minded coal-mine canaries willing to play ball with the other coalition first. What this additionally means is these emerging coalitions are not permanent. This era of Brokenists and Denialists is a transitional phase in a larger transformation...
..It’s only during the middle of the twentieth century that our modern ideas of left and right consolidated, when Democrats coalesced around the New Deal and Great Society while Republicans coalesced around the ideas of William F. Buckley, Jr.’s Conservative Movement. We’ve all lived our entire lives inside this tiny bubble of human history, so our definitions of left and right feel permanent to us, but they were always just temporary labels in a permanently shifting politics...
..We no longer have a left-right spectrum. We have a Brokenist-Denialist spectrum. Everyone who believes the system is broken—and there are a lot of them—is getting pulled into the Republican Party and the rightEveryone who thinks things are fine has become a Democrat on the left. If you were once on the left but started questioning whether the system is broken and needs significant reform, you’ll get pushed out into the coalition of the right. None of this has anything to do with what we classically called liberalism or conservatism, or the twentieth-century right and left.
This obviously isn’t sustainable, so it will not be sustained.
This won’t, and can’t, be the final form of either the Republican or Democratic Party. You can’t build a lasting politics around a Brokenist-Denialist spectrum. Eventually, Brokenists have to use their power to do something to actually fix the things they say are broken... This is beginning to happen in some ways, but it’s going to create an epic internal fight...
..The Democrats, on the other hand, have backed themselves into defending the indefensible. The current system is, in fact, broken, and everyone knows it. It’s archaic, designed for a mid-twentieth century that no longer exists. It doesn’t do what it’s supposed to do. It’s increasingly corrupted. The identitarian experiment the establishment adopted, and which professional elites seemed to love, proved deeply unpopular. Most important, Americans no longer trust the system.   https://www.renew-the-republic.com/p/the-brokenists-did-not-move-right

  Jim Kunstler,  Funny Money
As “Joe Biden” racked up Democratic presidential primary wins in 2024, the shadowy claque behind him allocated $27-billion to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) from the huge Inflation Reduction Act, ostensibly for “climate change action.” The money was stashed at Citibank, where it became a hidden slush-fund to keep payoffs flowing to party favorites no matter who won the 2024 electionAn EPA “special advisor on climate action,” one Brent Efron, told a Project Veritas investigative reporter that “President Biden” was “throwing gold bars off the Titanic”.
The key to understanding how the Democratic Party works is how it uses federal grants to redistribute taxpayer money into jobs programs for its rank-and-file. As seen in the recent USAID scandal, the action revolves around the creation of countless NGOs (non-governmental orgs). They are easily created, poorly supervised, and assembled into large networks of self-serving, inter-dependent organisms whose main mission is paying staffers — and secondarily pretending to do good works, as suggested by a given group’s name is. These staffers make up the matrix of Democratic Party activists, well-paid foot-soldiers in do-nothing jobs who can be called upon to cheer-lead for the party, organize street protests and, most critically, harvest ballots when the time comes.

Debts are also retirements.  The Answer To 1913 Is 2025: 3 Charts That Show Why The Income Tax, The IRS And The Federal Reserve Should All Be Abolished
The primary reason why we have had an almost unbelievably high standard of living over the past three decades is because we have piled up the biggest mountain of debt in the history of the world.  Once upon a time the United States was the wealthiest country on the entire planet, but all of that prosperity was not good enough for us.  So we started borrowing and borrowing and borrowing and we have now been living beyond our means for so long that we consider it to be completely normal.
When President Woodrow Wilson entered the White House in 1913, the U.S. was less than 3 billion dollars in debt.
Now we are 36 trillion dollars in debt
This is what a central bank is designed to do.
Most people simply do not understand this.

Why It’s Crucial To Expose US Provocations in Ukraine
If you believe that Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine was unprovoked, you will likely compare Putin to Hitler and will likely oppose President Trump’s peace negotiations with Russia... This is why it’s so crucial that people who know the truth about U.S. provocations in Ukraine and about America’s extreme hypocrisy to be fearlessly outspoken in proclaiming: the U.S. intentionally provoked the war, to weaken Russia, to wean Europe from Russian energy, and to make Europe more dependent on the U.S.  Unless the truth about U.S. provocations is exposed, there will be continued opposition to a peace deal for Ukraine, in both the U.S. and the EU.   https://original.antiwar.com/donald_smith/2025/02/19/why-its-crucial-to-expose-us-provocations-in-ukraine/

"It's a sh*t sandwich," a Trump administration official acknowledged.
"But Ukraine is going to have to eat it because [Trump] has made clear this is no longer our problem."
Axios
The Trump administration is increasing its pressure on Ukraine's (former) president Zelenski to swallow the shit sandwich. It offered a 'new' version of it which turned out to be the same as the old one:
The United States is doubling down on a demand that Ukraine relinquish half of its revenues from natural resources, including minerals, gas and oil, as well as earnings from ports and other infrastructure, according the document, which was reviewed by The New York Times.
The document, which was dated Feb. 21, states that the revenues will be directed to a fund in which the United States holds 100 percent financial interest, and that Ukraine should contribute to the fund until it reaches $500 billion — the amount President Trump has demanded from the war-torn country in exchange for American aid. That is more than twice Ukraine’s gross domestic product before the war.
The document does not stipulate that the United States will provide security guarantees for Ukraine in return for access to Ukrainian resources. That key demand from President Volodymyr Zelensky was absent in the first draft agreement presented to him last week, prompting him to decline to sign the deal.
There was even a threat, twice, to withdraw Starlink access from Ukraine's army should Zelenski reject the steal.

If the dollar is transformed from a fiat currency into a receipt for gold—which it should be since that’s the only way to stabilize the system for the long term— a massively higher gold price is needed.
I spelled that out in my 1993 book, Crisis Investing for the Rest of the ’90s. I came up with numbers. Depending on which parts of the money supply you wanted to use, gold would have to be many thousands, perhaps $40,000 per ounce.
My podcast partner, Matt Smith, has done a great analysis, which has gone viral, discussing this. He found, whether in US dollar terms, Euros, Chinese Yuan, or other currencies, that the likely price for revalued gold is someplace between $20,000 and $30,000 per ounce.

Establishing A Working Relationship

 Turning New Leaves,

"Not agreement capable" was the Russian assessment of American diplomats during the Obama years, and subsequently, because the Presidents did not have administrative control over the bureaucracies the military or the clandestine and intelligence agencies.
That projection continued through the November elections, that it would not matter which candidate took office, but it is in transition now, as the Trump administration is making rapid battlefield progress against the ensconced bureaucracies, and has put heads of service into the FBI, CIA, Pentagon and DNI, who are personally loyal to President Trump, and are moving to purge functionaries loyal to the prior regime from those agencies, while openly reforming them. There is a culture of fear being imposed in all of the agencies through job cuts, and many have chosen a cushioned-resignation which was offered.
The DOGE Forensic Accounting Audit software is tearing up the payroll system of the deep-state, a shot to the heart. This is establishing the possibility that Team Trump will be agreement-capable, which waters are now being tested diplomatically.
We will be able to observe the re-staffing of the Russian Embassy in Washington, the restitution of Russian diplomatic property and banking in the US, and the public statements of the Trump Administration, denouncing warlike interests, arrayed against Russia. These build the potential for a working relationship by establishing a sense of fairness and breaking ties with Russia's enemies in Ukraine, London and the European countries invested in war against Russia. Davos/WEF old-money has placed its bets...
The establishment of a preliminary working relationship, which this enables, will allow Russia and the US to proceed with mutually beneficial coordination, which does not involve extended risks of betrayal. A lot can be done within that basic realm of cooperation.
If the US actually removes American troops from former Warsaw Pact countries it would burn the bridge between the US and the WEF faction of NATO, a serious commitment to divorce those globalist financial interests. That would begin to build the next layer of trust. If the US destroys it's alliance with anti-Russian interests, then Russia may tentatively take some trusting risks to benefit the newly reformed imperial court, and fortify it against their common globalist enemies...
The next step of restoring trust, a deeper trust, a potential alliance, which would benefit both countries, would be to restore Nordstream, and to restore it to Russia and to German industrial interests. The traditional British strategy was to keep Russia and Germany at war with each other, to lend to both from London, rather than allow them to unite against London.
London, in this model, represents global finance, which profits from war lending, and debt-enslavement of nations. Rumors are that London investment is all-in for war.

Gilbert Doctorow gets into the rapid diplomatic advances between Russia and the US:  Transcript of ‘Judging Freedom’ 20 February edition
The Kremlin is very satisfied with the positive results of the meeting in Riyadh. They’re very pleased, of course, with all of the further development, the further evolution of what Trump is saying publicly. I think it’s fair to imagine that Trump’s positions haven’t changed. The only thing that has changed is the timing when he comes out with the next layer of revelation of where we really are...  So many things have happened in the last six days, which if you look at them, are all directly interrelated and consequences were known in advance.
I’ll give you two examples. This whole question about the mineral resources in Ukraine to be used as a security for America to recover its investment in this war. It was obvious that the terms that they gave to Zelensky would result in his rejecting them. And yet further American assistance was made contingent on his accepting them. Clear what they were going after. Similarly, the whole question of the questionnaire, The issue of a questionnaire that was sent out to the European Union member states over the weekend, in which they were required to say what military units and what equipment they would have available to enforce a peace treaty and to provide security to Ukraine after the signing of peace.
And what happened in the meeting on Monday was, and I think the Trump expected this, no show. They have nothing. They couldn’t reach agreement... Therefore, the questionnaire was intended to pose “put up or shut up”, and Trump knew in advance it would be “shut up”.
So these are not accidental or arbitrary moves. They were all coordinated to get the European Union offside, because it was evident that they are the war camp...
..In these circumstances, the United States can proceed directly with Russia...
..I think the most important thing that we have witnessed in the Riyadh meeting and what followed immediately after that is the Russian satisfaction that Trump is acting in good faith and that there is a negotiating partner here. Because remember the words that were used about the Russians speaking of the Americans in the last months, if not a couple of years, that America is not capable of reaching agreements. Remember the importance placed by Lavrov and others on trust and the whole– just note that the project of discussions has been put into three baskets.
The first and most immediate one is to repair the almost destroyed institutions for diplomatic exchange. The Russian embassy in Washington is non-functional. It doesn’t have an ambassador. It doesn’t have workable bank accounts..
..So if they had the staff in place to work on the thorny, very difficult questions that are in basket two, which includes solving the war in Ukraine, but also includes less difficult or less unpleasant issues like cooperation in space or joint work in the Arctic and the Arctic naval passages north of Siberia.
These types of subjects, which require a lot of expertise and constant support, the very idea that they exist as part of the overall reconciliation would give Moscow hope. Because all of these things, whether it’s restoring one or another type of the arms control agreements that were, that were canceled and should be restored, they all have to do with a constant interchange, a constant flow of people back and forth, which are, aside from the subject matter, the procedural side of this has its own relevance because all of it inspires confidence and trust...
..Russia is a big supplier of essential materials of all kinds, whether it’s hydrocarbons or metals or grains. Anyway, the Europeans were big consumers for good reasons. It wasn’t out of kindness. It was out of advantage. The United States never had that complementarity...
..It’s hard to imagine that Zelensky has a shelf life of more than a few weeks. That doesn’t mean the Ukraine has a shelf life of [no] more than a few weeks.
Remember, there is vast amount of armament that was sent out by Biden in the months, weeks and even days before he left office. So the notion that the Ukrainians have no arms is wrong. They do. They can last for a while. How many months no one can say...
..Here is a critical point to mention: that it is not the alignment of what Trump or Vance may be saying with what the Russians have been saying. It’s the alignment of what the Americans are now saying with the truth. And whether the Russians like it or don’t like it, whether they’re laughing, rejoicing, opening bottles of champagne, is irrelevant. It is to the advantage of us all, including those in power, to be speaking the truth and making their strategic plans based on reality, not on ideology...
..They see the other side of Gorbachev that we in the West, America think of, that is Gorbachev the peacemaker, the man who put an end to the Cold War division of Europe. And I think that’s how they’re looking at Trump today, hopefully, but without this euphoria, to be sure.   https://gilbertdoctorow.com/2025/02/21/transcript-of-judging-freedom-20-february-edition/

The Establishment reacts to Trump's diplomacy...  Lavrov Praises Trump for Saying NATO Led To Ukraine Invasion
Trump had written previously on Truth Social, "Biden never tried [to end the war], Europe has failed to bring Peace, and Zelenskyy probably wants to keep the ‘gravy train’ going. I love Ukraine, but Zelenskyy has done a terrible job, his Country is shattered, and MILLIONS have unnecessarily died – And so it continues…"  He has also addressed Ukraine, saying "You should have never started it."
But there's been plenty of dissent this side of the Atlantic. For example, Trump's own former vice president Mike Pence had this to say: "Mr. President, Ukraine did not ‘start’ this war," he wrote online. "Russia launched an unprovoked and brutal invasion claiming hundreds of thousands of lives. The Road to Peace must be built on the Truth."

But NATO countries along the alliance's so-called Eastern flank are still worried: "Cristian Diaconescu, the Romanian president’s chief of staff and adviser for defense and national security, said on Wednesday that the US delegation had rejected Moscow’s demand, but that there were no guarantees that Washington would not eventually make this concession to Vladimir Putin," FT reports.

Kosovo is reputedly a NATO/deep-state/Mafia crime and rendition hub, similar to Ukraine.  Potential US troop withdrawal from Europe to leave Kosovo exposed
Reports from European security officials suggest that the United States may consider withdrawing its troops from Europe, including its presence in Kosovo, if US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin reach an agreement to end the war in Ukraine. Germany’s Bild reported on February 19 that such a deal could lead to significant shifts in the security landscape of the region.
Currently, the Nato-led Kosovo Force (KFOR) maintains a presence in Kosovo to ensure freedom of movement and stability. KFOR has been operating in the region since 1999 following Nato's intervention in Serbia that ended the Kosovo conflict.

“I was sobbing, asking them, ‘Why do you want me to leave my house?’ My baby is upstairs, just let me get my baby please,’” Ayat Abdullah, 30, recalled from a shelter for displaced people in the village of Kafr Al-Labd. “They gave us seven minutes.   Claudia Sheinbaum Launches Initiative to Bolster Mexican Sovereignty As Trump Officially Declares Cartels as Terrorists
“Sheinbaum has used the relationship with Trump to define her personality as president and show the public, both at the national and international level, that she has her own style, focused on the technical and pragmatic,” he told EFE.
Sheinbaum’s message that her government is willing to cooperate with US authorities on security issues but will not accept direct US military intervention enjoys broad support across Mexico’s political spectrum. There are exceptions, of course, including some politicians in opposition parties and certain media figures who are calling for direct US intervention in Mexico, but they and their supporters represent a small minority.
The second ace up Mexico’s sleeve is, paradoxically, Donald Trump’s executive order designating Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organisations. The designation theoretically allows US authorities to impose penalties on entities and individuals that provide material support to cartels. That surely must include the US arms manufacturers and dealers who provide an estimated 70% of all the cartels’ weaponry as well as all the Wall Street, City of London and European b
anks that help the cartels to launder the proceeds from their businesses.[2]
If Sheinbaum plays her cards right, perhaps she can shift some of the focus onto these major facilitators of the global drugs trade. She has already announced plans to expand the lawsuit filed by Mexico’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs during AMLO’s presidency against US arms manufacturers and sellers, accusing them of knowingly selling weapons to Mexican cartels.   https://www.nakedcapitalism.com/2025/02/claudia-sheinbaum-launches-initiative-to-bolster-national-sovereignty-after-trump-officially-declares-cartels-as-terrorists.html

Shaken Not Stirred

 Briefly Disoriented,

Gilbert Doctorow explains the Russian view of Gorbachev:  Donald Trump: the Gorbachev of our times
As of last night, panelists on this talk show were still comparing Trump to Gorbachev but in a very different, much more favorable way. They now focus on Trump’s apparently genuine efforts to bring about peace and also to his remarkable political skills which no one, in Russia or here in the West ever suspected...
..Kellogg and several others in the Trump entourage said that the war was at a stalemate and that lives were now being lost daily for no purpose.
At a stalemate? we in the Opposition to the Washington narrative asked.   This suggested that Team Trump was receiving the same Kiev propaganda from their daily CIA input as had the Biden administration before it...
..All of these suppositions about Trump have in the past week been proven to be dead wrong. What we have seen is the Donald Trump 90-minute phone conversation with Vladimir Putin agreeing on the path to a summit meeting that will resolve the Ukraine war in the context of a full re-set of US-Russian relations. We heard Pete Hegseth tell the Ukraine Coordinating organization in Brussels that NATO membership for Ukraine is improbable and that return of the country to its pre-war borders would not happen. We watched as Vice President J.D. Vance directly criticized the European Union member states for undermining their own security by their authoritarian, Soviet-like attacks on free speech at home, by their denial of political legitimacy to their own populist parties on the Right and on the Left, who represent millions of their fellow citizens, by their encouraging the Romanian authorities to cancel their latest presidential elections because the candidate favoring normal relations with Russia came out first.
..The rift that Vance opened with the Europeans was widened to a broad chasm when matched with breaking news that US and Russian delegations would be meeting in Riyad yesterday to prepare the way for a resolution of the Ukraine war and that neither the Ukrainians nor the Europeans were invited to the table.  Nor would General Kellogg be present, because he was sidelined by Trump to look after relations with Ukraine and with the Europeans, while the presidential emissary to the talks with the Russians would be Trump confidant and recent facilitator of the Israeli-Hamas truce Steve Witkoff.
As Vance and Trump surely anticipated, the Vice President’s speech left the European high officials in the Munich Conference flustered, unbelieving, horrified...
..There was the realization that Europe is on its own in its defense on the Continent, that the U.S. now is a questionable friend and an unreliable ally.
Washington did not invite the Europeans to the talks, but by way of ‘consultation’ invited them to fill out a questionnaire that demanded figures on troops and equipment that they were prepared to send to Ukraine as ‘peace-keepers’ to provide for Ukrainian security following conclusion of a peace treaty. This prompted Emmanuel Macron to invite the leaders of the key European supporters of Ukraine to a meeting in Paris on Monday to issue a joint statement on their contribution to peace-keeping...
..As we now know, the European leaders, plus von der Leyen from the Commission, De Costa from the European Council and Mark Rutte representing NATO all failed to agree in Paris on putting together a contingent of peace-keepers.  Most remarkably Germany, Poland and Spain all said Nyet...
..At the press conference in Riyadh at the conclusion of their four and a half hour talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and with Presidential Foreign Policy advisor Yuri Ushakov, Rubio, Waltz and Witkoff spoke very wellThey were very diplomatic, very much in control of the discourse with aggressive, unfriendly journalists from the press. They showed themselves to be loyal, shall we say deferential to the President whose will they were carrying out. They also appeared to be fully up to the task.
From what the American negotiators said and to what Lavrov added in his own remarks to Russian journalists when the talks were over, we understand that the first issue that they addressed was to restore normal staffing and operating procedures at the respective diplomatic missions in Washington and Moscow which had been cut to nearly zero under the Biden administration. This begins with the appointment and confirmation of ambassadors on each side...
..Evidently the repair work on state-to-state relations will proceed in parallel and not be held up by talks on ending the war, which is now acknowledged as something that will take some time. The U.S. side recognizes that a permanent and broad relationship with Russia is essential to deal with global issues of interest to both nations.
This will bring the relationship to the third phase of talks:  about ‘geopolitical’ issues.  Here we may expect the U.S. to try to drive a wedge between Russia and China, and to try to agree on what role BRICS will have in the coming multipolar world while not fundamentally threatening U.S. interests.
The cherry on the cake was the press conference later yesterday that Donald Trump held at Mar a Lago. In answer to reporters’ questions on why Zelensky was excluded from the talks, he said that Zelensky had been at the table for three years, with no positive results.  As even today’s Financial Times recognizes in its article on the press conference, Trump was wholly dismissive of Zelensky and clearly wants to see him gone...
..What sense do I make of all the foregoing?
The negotiating methods that Trump used from inauguration day to present are a perfect example of the alternating feint to the right, feint to the left methods that Mikhail Gorbachev used from early in his presidency to keep his fellow members of the collective Soviet leadership submissive. This is what the panelists in Solovyov’s show understood from their close experience with this at home...
..Those in the alternative media, just like those in mainstream who try to kick the tires, saying that Trump is motivated by narrow financial interests or other personal considerations that come from his vanity are being small-minded and are intentionally missing the big picture.   https://gilbertdoctorow.com/2025/02/19/donald-trump-the-gorbachev-of-our-times/

John Helmer says that Russia is insisting on proper diplomacy, step by step. TRUMP TRIES GRANDSTANDING IN RIYADH – RUBIO STEPS DOWN
It was obvious from the slow descent of US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, stepping down the stairs from his aircraft, watching his shoes until they hit the ground in Riyadh, that the US side in Tuesday’s talks lacked a confident mandate from the White House for negotiations with the Russians.
Rubio was there – inexperienced and nervous...– to arrange a grandstand display by President Donald Trump at the  summit meeting he wants with President Vladimir Putin. No more, no less.
Rubio ended up with less. To the uncomprehending Trump, speaking at his own press conference in Florida fifteen hours later, Rubio and National Security Advisor Michael Waltz are unable to explain...
..Lavrov meant that the Americans were coming to the meeting with no agenda except for what Trump and Putin had said during their telephone call of February 12, and no agreement among the Americans themselves on what to say to the Russians behind closed doors.
“We didn’t just listen”, Lavrov said in briefing the Russian press after the meeting, “but we also heard each other…This does not necessarily mean a convergence of positions.”  ...
..The points agreed are the appointment of ambassadors in Washington and Moscowremoval of restrictions the US has imposed on Russian diplomatic operations in the US, including at the United Nations in New York; and the expansion of the bilateral agenda for talks to come.  These were undertakings to continue talking – there was no agreement on more because the US side came unprepared for more...
..Lavrov said more — Trump would not be getting his grandstand soon with Putin.
Instead, Lavrov said“the foreign ministers, the national security advisors were tasked with meeting and seeing what needs to be done before the presidents can begin to negotiate a specific date and date for the summit.” The key term Lavrov emphasized for Trump’s men was “before” – перед тем —  that’s process before PR...
..In Riyadh, Lavrov also revealed a split on the US side. He told Russian reporters that he had asked Rubio and Waltz what end-of-war settlement plan Trump’s emissary on Ukraine, General Keith Kellogg,  had been discussing in Munich last week with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski, according to Sikorsi’s public disclosure and the video record.   “I asked US Secretary of State Rubio and Waltz what it means. They said it was a fake.”...
..Rubio then telephoned the foreign ministers of France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, together with the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs, to reassure them on what had not been agreed with the Russians. The text of the release reveals the political precedence Rubio gives to the Europeans ahead of the UK and the EU.   https://johnhelmer.net/trump-tries-grandstanding-in-riyadh-rubio-steps-down/#more-91124

"I will meet Donald with pleasure" – that's what President Putin expressed Wednesday in a brief televised interview with RT. He further outlined some conditions for such a meeting, saying that it can't just involve sitting for some tea or coffee, but both the Russian and American diplomatic teams which met in Riyadh the day prior must thoroughly prepare to negotiate issues most important to each, particularly the Ukraine crisis...
..Putin also called the Trump team 'completely different' in terms of positive openness and willingness to work with Moscow, in contrast to the prior Biden administration, and given the Riyadh meeting took place without bias and on "friendly" terms, and with no "condemnation of what had been done in the past" – meaning the two sides showed willingness to move forward and not rehash a blame-game.
Of the Tuesday Saudi-hosted talks, which lasted four-and-half hours, Putin described: "It is impossible to solve many issues, including the Ukrainian crisis, without increasing trust between Russia and the United States" – and stressed that the process is about restoring this trust, toward a resolution of the conflict.
He was further quoted in Interfax saying of the talks: "Yes, I have been informed. I rate them highly, there are results."
As for Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, his follow-up assessment after leading the delegation in Riyadh was as follows: "Moscow and Washington need to clean up the legacy of former US President Joe Biden's administration, which ruined the foundation of long-lasting cooperation between the two countries."...

'Pure Evil': Hamas Hands Over Remains of Dead Israeli Mother, Toddler & Infant
Thursday was a somber and tragic day for Israel as the bodies of four slain Israeli hostages were returned by Hamas, 503 days after they were initially kidnapped in the Oct.7, 2023 raids on southern Israel and massacres.
"Hamas had said earlier in the week that it was handing over the bodies of Shiri Silberman Bibas, her two young sons Ariel and Kfir, and Oded Lifshitz, who was 83 at the time of his abduction," Times of Israel writes...
